The subject of this post is a natural 42 carat tanzanite crystal that is being cut by Michael Moriarty. This piece has already been heated to enhance its color, so it’s not totally natural from the earth. That being said, most of the Tanzanite you see on the market that is this color has been heated to enhance its color. This treatment is stable and irreversible.
Originally, I was going to sell this crystal as a specimen, but it hasn’t sold and the tip of this piece was ideal for cutting. (Transparent and few inclusions.)
While it’s not the top color that we normally cut, i figured it would cut a nice bright light color gem that would be worth more as a cut gem than a crystal. Not only that, it would be a bit easier to sell since there is a larger market for faceted gems vs natural crystals.
Sooo I hacked it in half and removed the included material to begin the cutting process.
The final weight on the gem is 2.94ct and measures 8.2mm x 8.2mm x 6.6mm. This gem will be available on our next Online Gem Show Wednesday September 6th at 7:05pm here:
